Beyond the Stereotype: Re imagining Gender in the Modern Cinema

The Department of English, MES Kalladi College (Autonomous), organised a Gender Equity Programme titled “Beyond the Stereotype: Re-imagining Gender in Modern Cinema” on 18 September 2026 at Tagore Hall. The programme began with the welcome address by program coordinator Dr. Shani A. Mopila, followed by the presidential address by Dr. Reena Mohamed and the inauguration by Principal Dr. Jasmine P. M. The session by Dr. Harinarayanan S (Asst Professor, NSS College, Ottapalam) who is also a reknown film critic and cultural commentator was highly interactive and student-centred, with students actively sharing their perspectives and raising questions. The discussion explored cinema, politics and literature, particularly the ways in which films and literary texts represent gender, power, identity and social realities. Students engaged in discussions on gender stereotypes, political and cultural influences on cinema, and the role of literature and visual storytelling in shaping social perceptions. The programme provided students with an opportunity to critically examine familiar representations and connect literary and cinematic narratives with contemporary social and political contexts. The session concluded with the vote of thanks by Sreya.
