Profile

The Department of Political Science is committed to nurturing critical thinking, democratic values, and civic responsibility among students. With a strong academic foundation and contemporary orientation, the Department strives to equip learners with analytical skills and a deep understanding of political systems, governance, and human rights.

As part of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), the Department offers Minor Courses across the First, Second, and Third Semesters, providing a structured and progressive learning experience. The curriculum is carefully designed to introduce students to core political concepts and gradually advance towards critical and applied dimensions of political studies.

In the First Semester, courses such as Human Rights and A Preface to Indian Constitution introduce students to the historical evolution of rights, constitutional philosophy, and the fundamental principles of governance. The Human Rights course explores global frameworks, including key international developments and institutions, helping students understand the protection of rights at both national and international levels.

The Second Semester focuses on Indian Constitution and Human Rights, offering a comprehensive understanding of constitutional provisions, fundamental rights, Directive Principles of State Policy, and institutional mechanisms such as the judiciary and human rights commissions. It also addresses contemporary challenges including environmental issues, digital rights, and the rights of marginalized communities .

In the Third Semester, the curriculum advances into specialized and contemporary areas such as Gender Politics and Human Rights in Popular Culture and Indian Polity: Political Dynamics and Emerging Trends. These courses critically examine issues like gender justice, representation in media, identity politics, democratic challenges, electoral systems, and the impact of digital governance and new media on political processes.

The syllabus emphasizes interactive and experiential learning through seminars, case studies, group discussions, field visits, and project-based assessments. Students are encouraged to engage with real-world issues such as social justice, minority rights, media representation, and policy challenges, thereby enhancing their analytical and advocacy skills.

The Minor Courses offered by the Department are highly beneficial for civil service aspirants and students preparing for competitive examinations, as they provide a comprehensive understanding of political theory, constitutional law, and current affairs along with strong analytical abilities.

Through its academic initiatives, the Department of Political Science aspires to develop socially committed, critically aware, and intellectually empowered individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to public life and governance.
