Profile
The Research and Postgraduate Department of Chemistry, established in 1967, has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, growth, and service. Initially introduced to handle the Pre-Degree course, the department progressively expanded its academic offerings with the B.Sc. Chemistry (Subsidiary) programme in 1971, B.Sc. Chemistry (Main) in 1976, and the M.Sc. Chemistry programme in 1981, thereby evolving into a full-fledged postgraduate department. Over the years, it has been recognized for its academic quality, with NAAC peer teams identifying it as one of the best-performing departments of the institution.
The department achieved significant milestones with DST–FIST funding in 2014, enhancing its research infrastructure, and its recognition as a Research Centre under the University of Calicut in 2017, enabling doctoral research. Currently, it has recognized research supervisors contributing to advanced research and mentoring scholars.
Academically, the department focuses on undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes, emphasizing strong theoretical knowledge, experimental skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. The curriculum incorporates modern and emerging areas such as Green Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Nanochemistry, and interdisciplinary research, ensuring relevance to current scientific developments.
Supported by a dedicated team of faculty and staff, the department actively engages in research, publications, and funded projects. It provides well-equipped laboratories, advanced instrumentation facilities, and a conducive environment for innovation and learning.
Beyond academics, the department contributes to society through extension activities such as water quality analysis, dry rubber content testing, and awareness programmes. With a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the department aims to produce competent, critically thinking graduates prepared for the challenges of a dynamic, technology-driven world.
