Programme Overview

M.A History

The M.A. History Programme under CBCSS (2019) of the University of Calicut is designed to provide advanced and comprehensive knowledge in historical studies through a structured four-semester system. The curriculum integrates core areas such as historical theory and methodology, Indian history, Kerala history, and world history, along with elective courses in emerging and specialized domains.

The programme emphasizes critical analysis, historiographical debates, and research skills, supported by training in archival studies, archaeology, and interdisciplinary approaches. A distinctive highlight is the inclusion of dissertation work and courses like Digital History, enabling students to engage with modern research tools and methodologies.

With a strong focus on analytical thinking, academic writing, and independent research, the programme prepares students for careers in teaching, research, heritage management, and related fields, while promoting intellectual growth and lifelong learning.

Eligibility Criteria

Any UG Degree (10+2+3 or more years pattern including Professional degrees), of this University or a recognised degree, with at least 50% aggregate marks or equivalent Overall CGPA.

OBC/OEC candidates are eligible to relaxation up to 5%. SC/ST candidates need only to get a pass.

PSO1

Historical Analysis and Interpretation: Students will be able to critically analyze historical events, sources, and historiographical debates, and interpret them within appropriate socio-political, economic, and cultural contexts.

Research and Methodological Competence: Students will acquire advanced skills in historical research methodology, including source criticism, data collection from archives, and preparation of scholarly dissertations.

PSO3

Regional, National, and Global Perspectives: Students will develop in-depth knowledge of Kerala, Indian, and World history, enabling comparative understanding of historical developments across different regions and periods.

PSO4

Application of Interdisciplinary and Digital Tools: Students will be able to apply interdisciplinary approaches and modern tools such as digital history techniques, archaeology, and archival studies in historical research and documentation.
